Donald Trump's War on Political Correctness Taps Into Mainstream Frustration (VIDEO)

Amazing that WaPo even green-lighted this piece.

From Karen Tumulty and Jenna Johnson, "Why Trump may be winning the war on ‘political correctness’":

Cathy Cuthbertson once worked at what might be thought of as a command post of political correctness — the campus of a prestigious liberal arts college in Ohio.

“You know, I couldn’t say ‘Merry Christmas.’ And when we wrote things, we couldn’t even say ‘he’ or ‘she,’ because we had transgender. People of color. I mean, we had to watch every word that came out of our mouth, because we were afraid of offending someone, but nobody’s afraid of offending me,” the former administrator said.

All of which helps explain why the 63-year-old grandmother showed up at a recent Donald Trump rally in Hilton Head Island, S.C., where she moved when she retired a year ago.

The Republican front-runner is “saying what a lot of Americans are thinking but are afraid to say because they don’t think that it’s politically correct,” she said. “But we’re tired of just standing back and letting everyone else dictate what we’re supposed to think and do.”

In the 2016 Republican presidential primary season, “political correctness” has become the all-purpose enemy. The candidates have suggested that it is the explanation for seemingly every threat that confronts the country: terrorism, illegal immigration, an economic recovery that is leaving many behind, to name just a few.

Others argue that growing antipathy to the notion of political correctness has become an all-purpose excuse for the inexcusable. They say it has emboldened too many to express racism, sexism and intolerance, which endure even as the country grows more diverse.

“Driving powerful sentiments underground is not the same as expunging them,” said William A. Galston, a Brookings Institution scholar who advised President Bill Clinton. “What we’re learning from Trump is that a lot of people have been biting their lips, but not changing their minds.”

In an October poll by Fairleigh Dickinson University, 68 percent agreed with the proposition that “a big problem this country has is being politically correct.”

It was a sentiment felt strongly across the political spectrum, by 62 percent of Democrats, 68 percent of independents and 81 percent of Republicans. Among whites, 72 percent said they felt that way, but so did 61 percent of nonwhites.

“People feel tremendous cultural condescension directed at them,” and that their values are being “smirked at, laughed at” by the political and media elite, said GOP strategist Steve Schmidt.

“ ‘Political correctness’ are the two words that best respond to everything that a conservative feels put upon,” added pollster Frank Luntz, who has advised Republicans. The label is, he said, a validation that what many on the right see as legitimate policy and cultural differences are not the same as racism, sexism or heartlessness...

Bill Clinton and the Left's Sex-Harassment Problem

From Carrie Lukas, at the New York Post, "The Bill Clinton effect: Behind the left’s sex-harassment problem":
News of rampant sexual harassment at a leading progressive public relations firm seems to have surprised some on the Left: How can enlightened liberals, so staunchly committed to women’s equality and progress, allow old-school sexism and abuse of power to persist?

How could FitzGibbon Media, which represented MoveOn.org, NARAL Pro-Choice America, and the AFL-CIO, have a CEO sending text messages asking for dirty pictures from female underlings?

Conservatives shouldn’t start throwing stones: There are plenty of cads in every political party. Yet progressives really shouldn’t be surprised that such behavior exists in liberal enclaves; in fact, there’s reason to suspect there may be more mistreatment of women by the Left than the Right.

It’s a phenomenon I call “the Bill Clinton effect.” President Clinton wasn’t just another example of a prominent pol who habitually cheated on his wife with many women, including those on his staff. Clinton showcased how those who normally police behavior and work to penalize men for mistreating women will excuse men aligned with them politically.

In other words, Clinton revealed that liberals can expect to get away with a lot more in terms of abusing women than conservatives...

Ted Cruz's Voter Base Has Largest 'Room-to-Grow' in Latest Wall Street Journal/NBC News Poll

This is interesting, at WSJ, "Poll Points to Upside for Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio in GOP Race":
The heated rhetoric and large candidate field have made the Republican primary race look loud and messy. But here’s a simple way to view the landscape: The GOP electorate is divided into three, broad groups, each roughly equal in size.

There is the socially conservative wing, which has elevated Sen. Ted Cruz and Ben Carson. The GOP’s establishment-friendly, more-centrist wing backs Sen. Marco Rubio and a few others. And then there are the Donald Trump voters, a largely working-class and male group drawn together by Mr. Trump’s unique persona and, in large measure, his promise to end illegal immigration.

With about one-third of voters in each camp, according to indications seen in December Wall Street Journal/NBC News polling, the stage is set for some drama: Which candidate has the crossover appeal needed to win majority support? Once Iowa and New Hampshire start to winnow the field, which surviving candidate has the most room to grow?

The short answer, based on Journal/NBC News poll results: As of now, Mr. Cruz looks well-positioned to draw voters from outside his cadre of social conservatives, presuming he does well in one of the first two races. Mr. Rubio also shows signs of crossover appeal beyond his establishment lane.

Donald Trump, by contrast, doesn’t show as strong a pull beyond his own set of supporters. And it will come as little surprise, given his standing in the polls, that Jeb Bush would have a challenge even if he scored well in the early balloting...
Yes, but be sure to click through to the graphics. Trump pulls in 57 percent of the social conservatives (Cruz's base), which is more than Marco Rubio pulls in of the Trump voters. So, it's a matter of perspective. I'm discounting so-called establishment voters in this poll, mainly because we're talking about the primaries, and secondly I see the establishment folks like Rubio as the extreme long-shots. So, it's going to be interesting once we see the shakeout from both Iowa and New Hampshire.

Ranchers Dwight Hammond and Steven Hammond Surrender to Authorities in San Pedro

At the Los Angeles Times, "As Oregon occupation grows, rancher and his son quietly surrender."

And at Fox News, "Rancher family reports to prison, does not endorse Oregon siege":
As armed protesters occupied buildings on a federal wildlife preserve in Oregon Monday, the father and son whose cause they claimed to embrace turned themselves in to police in California.

On Sunday, Dwight Hammond, 73, and his son, Steve, 46, embarked on their road trip across their home state, took a flight to Los Angeles and then traveled some 25 miles south to Terminal Island Federal Correctional Institution, in San Pedro, Calif., where they will finish their prison sentences.

The Hammond family has “run out of hope” that the siege by self-professed patriots some 70 miles from their home in rural Oregon will change things.

“Our government is so broken,” family matriarch Suzie Hammond told FoxNews.com of their ongoing legal battle. “We can’t keep fighting the government – for decades this fight has disrupted our lives, our ranch operation.”

While deeply upset over their situation, Suzie Hammond stopped short of supporting the armed takeover of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, south of Burns. More than 100 protesters moved into the site on Saturday after participating in a peaceful rally in Burns on behalf of the Hammonds.

Suzie Hammond, reached at her home in the Oregon wilderness, said her family had no role in the planning or execution of the standoff and said she has no intention of visiting. The standoff is being led by Ammon Bundy – whom the Hammonds have met previously – and his brother Ryan Bundy, sons of rancher Cliven Bundy who had his own armed standoff with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in Nevada in 2014.

“I wouldn’t say I was grateful,” Hammond said when asked about the protesters’ bid to draw attention to their plight. “But maybe there is the capability of doing some kind of change that might make life worth living for us again. Soon, there will be no ranchers left.”

A longtime friend and neighbor of the Hammonds, Ruth Danielsen, told FoxNews.com that the Bundy brothers didn’t want the Hammonds to turn themselves in. But Danielson said the father-son rancher duo is hardly the image of angry domestic terrorists, despite being charged under such laws.

“They are the nicest humans you would ever want to meet, very polite, salt-of-the-earth types,” Danielsen said. “They are always giving hay away to other ranchers who need it and donating money to local schools and charities, really nice people. Not the people the government should be going after.”

A legal team for the Hammonds insisted in a statement released Monday that Dwight and Steve “respect the rule of law.”

“They have litigated this matter within the federal courts for over five years and, in every instance, have followed the order of the court without incident or violation. That includes serving the entire sentences imposed in this case by the judge who heard the evidence at trial and who concluded that imposition of a five-year sentence under these circumstances would ‘shock the conscience,’” read the statement...

So Far, Local, State, and Federal Authorities Have Taken Low-Key Approach to Malheur Occupation

Well, yeah, better to avoid a Democrat Party, Janet Reno-style massacre.

At the New York Times, "Cautious Response to Armed Oregon Protest":
BURNS, Ore. — Clad in boots, cowboy hats and camouflage, a small band of antigovernment protesters stood in the snow and subfreezing cold on Monday at a federally owned wildlife sanctuary they have taken over, called themselves defenders of the Constitution, and declared that they were at the vanguard of a national movement to force Washington to release its hold on vast tracts of Western land.

For its part, the federal government appeared content, for now, to monitor the situation and wait out the protesters.

The armed group, which said it had adopted the name Citizens for Constitutional Freedom, has occupied a handful of buildings at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge near here since Saturday and says it does not plan to budge until its conditions are met.

The group is small — an exact number is hard to pin down — but claims to have the backing of a long list of antigovernment groups. Its goals are ambitious: The protesters want “the federal government to give up its unconstitutional presence in this county,” said Ammon Bundy, one of the leaders, at a news conference on Monday.

Members of the group also want state and local officials to hold a hearing on what they say is the abuse of federal authority against one particular ranching family here, the Hammonds, two of whom surrendered to the authorities on arson charges on Monday and went to prison.

The confrontation at Malheur seems to be the latest iteration of a generations-old struggle between Westerners who make their living off the land, and the federal government that controls so much of it.

But for the protesters at the wildlife refuge — a preserve for native birds, “closed until further notice,” according to its website — there was no sign of the national groundswell of support they hoped to attract. While media attention was plentiful, there was no sign of officials trying to meet their demands or of law enforcement closing in on them. The F.B.I. said it would take the lead in handling the standoff, working with state and local agencies, but no effort was made to keep the occupiers from coming and going as they pleased.

In Burns, the nearest town to the wildlife center, people said they were exasperated by the activists, most of whom seem to be from outside the area.

“They’ve put us backwards,” said Patty Hodge, a bartender in this small town, who said the stream of patrons through the Central Pastime Tavern had expressed overwhelming disapproval of the protesters. “They’re here for their own agenda, not for the people of Harney County at all.”

Militia Update: Dave Ward, Harney County Sheriff, Tells Malheur Occupiers to 'Go Home' (VIDEO)

Actually, the so-called "armed militants" are settling-in for a long haul.

But see the Portland Oregonian, "Harney County sheriff to Oregon militants: 'Go home'":

BURNS — The sheriff of this small community has a short, unmistakable message for the militants occupying a complex of federal buildings southeast of town.

"Go home."

During a news conference that lasted only about a minute Monday afternoon, Harney County Sheriff David Ward read from prepared statements condemning the group led by the sons of controversial Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy.

The people who have occupied the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge since Saturday evening say they don't plan to leave. In fact, they have outlined plans to turn the refuge over to area ranchers and loggers.

Their beef in Harney County is part of a larger, longer-standing debate over the ownership and management of U.S. public lands.

Ward took no questions from reporters and offered no clues to the response that local, state and federal law enforcement officials might have planned to quell the occupation 45 minutes outside town.

The FBI is leading the response. The Oregon State Sheriff's Association, the Oregon State Police and sheriff's offices from around Oregon also have sent people to Burns to help.

"Our goal is to work together and restore calm and regular services for the people of that community," Ward said...

Pamela Geller has the report, via Telegraph UK, "WATCH VIDEO: Islamic State threatens UK, shows murder of five “British spies”:

 photo 2is_2625113a_zpsxoegfo3v.jpg
Intelligence agencies were hunting a new ‘Jihadi John’ after an Islamic extremist with a British accent murdered five men accused of spying for the UK.

In a video released on social media the masked gunman warned David Cameron that the West could never win in the war against Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isil), while mocking the impact of RAF airstrikes.

In a further chilling twist, a young boy aged around four, and appearing to speak with a British accent, also appeared on screen, threatening to kill non-Muslims.

The victims were all shot in the head at point blank range after the well-spoken British sounding terrorist delivered his propaganda rant.

The sickening ten and a half minute video had echoes of those posted by the Isil terrorist dubbed Jihadi John, who was responsible for a string of murders including the beheading of British aid worker Alan Henning.

Jihadi John, who was later identified as 27-year-old Mohamed Emwazi from London, was killed in a US drone strike last November.

MI5 agents were urgently working to establish the identity of the new terrorist, amid concern that the video might signal the start of a new Isil propaganda campaign, which comes in the wake of the Britain’s decision to join coalition airstrikes against Isil targets in Syria.

A source in the Foreign Office said the propaganda video had likely been released to “divert attention away from Isil’s recent military failures in Iraq and its inability to look after the citizens in the areas it controls”.

As well as speaking with a London sounding accent, the terrorist made reference to the soldiers working being paid the minimum wage, further betraying his UK roots.

The video began with apparent confessions from the five Arabic men who were wearing orange prisoner style jumpsuits.

One of the men claimed to have passed information to the West about prominent Isil figures who were subsequently targeted by the coalition, including the group’s deputy leader Abu Muslim al-Turkmani, who was killed in a US drone strike last August.

Abu Muslim al-Turkmani, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant governor for territories held by the organization in IraqAbu Muslim al-Turkmani was killed by coalition forces last August

The video then cut to a desert landscape where the victims were shown kneeling before five gunmen clad in camouflage clothing and black Isil masks.

Michelle Malkin Backs Donald Trump on Hillary Clinton Attacks

Conservative columnist and author Michelle Malkin will join Conservative Review with nationally-syndicated radio host Mark Levin, Breitbart News has learned exclusively.

“The mainstream media and Beltway establishment have not only attempted to hijack the political process, but have also sought to hide the awful truth—that both political parties have sold out to the Washington Cartel,” Malkin said in the statement provided to Breitbart News. “I am proud to join the team at Conservative Review and will help them fight political spin by promoting conservative values and free-market principles with some of the best and brightest minds in the conservative movement.”

Levin, the organization’s editor-in-chief, added that Malkin is a “super addition” to the team there.
When asked if she supports Donald Trump’s attacks on the Clintons, Bill as a sexual predator and Hillary as an enabler, “Of course you should go there,” said Malkin. “At a time when the GOP establishment has effectively failed to push back against the ‘war on women’ meme in the Democrat Party … To be able to talk bluntly about it is something most people on the Right have been thirsting for.”

Malkin did, however, go on to question if Trump was the right vehicle for the attacks, citing her own experience with the businessman turned politician...

Donald Trump Cut Deals with Banks and Pulled Cash Out of Casinos to Weather Credit Crisis in the 1990s

Hmm, sounds like real world experience, something the current occupant of the White House sorely lacks.

At WSJ, "Trump and His Debts: A Narrow Escape":
On Labor Day weekend in 1990, as Donald Trump faced the worst crisis of his career, he and Wilbur Ross Jr. headed to Atlantic City, N.J., for talks at Mr. Trump’s opulent Taj Mahal casino, which had just opened but was already on the verge of missing a bond payment.

Mr. Ross, as an expert on distressed assets, represented bondholders. Mr. Trump brought him to the seaside town for talks, in a helicopter bearing the name “Trump” in giant red letters.

“The bondholders were obviously quite angry,” Mr. Ross says. “Their initial inclination was to throw the rascal out.”

The chopper landed on a helipad near the boardwalk. Instantly, people swarmed around a waiting car, thinking Mr. Trump was in it. “They were shoving video cameras at it…It was amazing the adulation he got from the crowd,” Mr. Ross recalls.

“It changed my whole opinion. That memory stuck with me and got me to the conclusion that the Taj Mahal stripped of Trump the individual would likely be a lot less successful than the Trump Taj Mahal with Donald.”

In 1990, Mr. Trump, though known publicly as financially savvy and very rich, was in deep financial trouble. He and his companies owed $3.4 billion and couldn’t make the payments. That posed the risk of lenders seizing his hotels, casinos and other assets.

Worse, $830 million of the debt carried his personal guarantee. Creditors, if they wanted, could force him into personal bankruptcy.

He survived. Today he is a billionaire, who cites his wealth and success as a reason that, as president, he could make America “great again.” Mr. Trump has no government record to weigh. One way to gauge the kind of president he might be is to examine his business career, and particularly how he dealt with its biggest crisis...
It's fascinating.

Americans Divided on Obama's Executive Power Grab for Gun Control (VIDEO)

Americans are divided on gun laws, as 47 percent support stricter gun laws, with 50 percent opposed.

But voters support 89 - 9 percent, including 84 - 14 percent among voters in households where there are guns, requiring background checks on gun purchases at gun shows or online.

Voters also support 58 - 38 percent a nationwide ban on the sale of assault weapons. Voters in gun households oppose such a ban 53 - 45 percent.

It is "too easy" to buy a gun in the U.S., 55 percent of voters say, including 40 percent in gun households. Another 4 percent, including 6 percent in gun households, say it is "too difficult," and 36 percent, including 49 percent in gun households, say it is "about right."

This is according to the Portland Oregonian, "Oregon militants in high spirits, ready for long wait at refuge, supporter says."

The newspaper was unable to independently confirm that children were being brought into the refuge, but if true, it raises a particularly ominous element to any standoff scenario. Janet Reno's ATF, FBI, and other federal agencies justified the storming of the Waco compound, where David Koresh was holed up with Branch Davidian members, by citing allegations of child abuse. (According to ABC News, 46 children were inside the complex at the time of the raid; however, scholarly research indicates the allegations have not been proved conclusively.)

Ammon Bundy, Leader of Oregon Occupation, Plans No Violence Unless Government Intervenes (VIDEO)

Here's the latest, following a press conference, this morning, at the Portland Oregonian, "Ammon Bundy says refuge-occupying militants plan no violence unless government intervenes":

Ammon Bundy, a leader of a group of militants occupying a wildlife refuge in eastern Oregon, said during a news conference Sunday morning that the group has no intention of violence unless the government acts against them.

Ammon Bundy, son of Nevada rancher Clive Bundy, would not disclose how many militants are occupying the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge headquarters.

The occupation began when self-described militiamen from several states came to Burns to protest the impending imprisonment of two Harney County ranchers. Some time after the rally, key militia leaders broke off and drove across the high desert basin south of Burns to the wildlife refuge. They said they took over the refuge headquarters, which was unoccupied for the holiday weekend.

Angry Anti-Refugee Protest at Church World Service Building in Lancaster, Pennsylvania (VIDEO)

Man, 2016's going to be the year of the epic anti-government protests.

My prediction: We're going to see violence, and it won't be isolated to so called "far-right" militias. Leftists are going start going all Red Army Faction on the hated reactionaries of AmeriKKKa.

At LancasterOnline, "Groups for and against Syrian refugees have loud but peaceful face-off in Lancaster":

Two very different visions of America emerged in the cold in downtown Lancaster Saturday afternoon over the Syrian refugee issue.

Rallies for and against refugees ended up in a peaceful — though sometimes punctuated by loud shout-downs — face-off on busy East King Street.

At noon, a group of about 30 people gathered outside the Lancaster office of Church World Service at 308 E. King St. for a series of speakers who warned of the dangers of letting refugees from war-torn Syria into the U.S.

Church World Service is a refugee resettlement service. Three Syrian families have been relocated in Lancaster County so far with at least two others on their way.

About 250 pro-refugee men, women and children soon showed up from a counter-rally in Musser Park and formed a block-long queue just on the other side of King Street.

Leaders for both rallies urged non-confrontational behavior and for the most part that was the case as participants let their many signs do the talking.

Those who want to see more Syrian refugees come to Lancaster County carried placards with such slogans as “We Are All Refugees,” “Welcome Refugees — Proud Lancaster Tradition,” “Compassion, Not Fear, Love, Not Hate,” and “Bigots Go Home.“

Across the street, amid waving American and Tea Party flags, signs read, “Aiding A Foreign Invasion is Treason,” “Keep Syrians Out,” “Remember Paris” and “No Sharia Law In America.”

One brief moment of solidarity surfaced when the anti-refugee rally started singing “God Bless America” and refugee supporters quickly joined in.

America is not being compassionate by bringing to its shores Islamic people who are not tolerant of other religions and homosexuals, said Dan Gray, a Schuylkill County resident and rally organizer.

“Sharia law is fundamentally incompatible with the Constitutional laws of the United States,” Gray said. “Syrians are not refugees. Bad things are happening there but we don’t have the space to take in everyone who had bad things happen to them.
“You want to help Syrians? Help them over there.”
It's going to get violent folks. Leftists are going to bring "some muscle" to silence the opposition.

In phone interviews from inside the occupied building Saturday night, Ammon Bundy and his brother, Ryan Bundy, said they are not looking to hurt anyone. But they would not rule out violence if police tried to remove them, they said.
“The facility has been the tool to do all the tyranny that has been placed upon the Hammonds,” Ammon Bundy said. The Oregonian story also includes an Ammon Bundy Facebook video asking others to come help him. There he says that “this is not a time to stand down. It’s a time to stand up and come to Harney County.” Beneath the video, the AP reports, is this statement: “ALL PATRIOTS IT’S TIME TO STAND UP NOT STAND DOWN!!! WE NEED YOUR HELP!!! COME PREPARED.”

Bundy's also interviewed at CNN. He doesn't mention the use of force to defend the occupation, but he calls the federal government's land policies an illegitimate tyranny over the people.

Orange County's Conservative Movement Still Going Strong or Fading Rapidly?

As you can see, the headline's more provocative at the hard-copy newspaper.

Here's the online story, at the O.C. Register, "Orange County's famously conservative activism is alive but faces a turning point":

Orange County Conservatives photo 1559784_10208691228661110_8134686554526291365_n_zps0qijpz9f.jpg
Orange County’s hothouse environment for right-wing movements – which brought you everything from a 1961 anti-communism camp to Orly Taitz’s birther lawsuits – appears unlikely to cool any time soon.

Despite once-dominant GOP voter registration here experiencing a 25-year slide, a dedicated core of conservatives continues to collaborate and keep the flame alive.

“A lot of people have left the Republican Party because they’re dissatisfied with the party,” said Deborah Pauly, a member of the county GOP’s governing Central Committee who has clashed with establishment Republicans. “But they are still very active blogging, rallying, walking precincts. They’re organizing themselves and events outside of the party.”

Those events include a 2011 Yorba Linda rally outside an Islamic event featuring two Muslims who were considered controversial by some. Pauly’s headline-grabbing diatribe at the rally included calling the men “pure, unadulterated evil.”

Pauly, a Tea Party favorite, plans to mobilize these activists for her 2016 Assembly campaign against Harry Sidhu, a more moderate Republican. She’s a fan of Donald Trump and Ted Cruz and says she’s glad Taitz raised the question of President Barack Obama’s birth certificate – although not necessarily how she went about it.

“They’re outliers, no doubt about it,” said Pauly, 56. “But the press endeavors to paint them as crazy. ... I support freedom of expression. That’s the beauty of America.”

Pauly is part of a lineage of ultraconservatives extending at least back to the 1961 anti-communism camp, which attracted a reported 7,000 schoolchildren. The weeklong Anaheim event got funding from Knott’s Berry Farm founder Walter Knott, who also supported the thriving county chapter of the John Birch Society.

The Rev. Lou Sheldon, who founded the Traditional Values Coalition in Anaheim in 1980, points to wealthy conservative backers as a key element in making the county a breeding ground for movements such as his. The activist group got started with a $100,000 donation from local businessman Herb Leo.

The TVC, which says it represents 43,000 churches nationwide, is listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, citing its verbal attacks on gay and transgender people. Sheldon says his group is simply expressing its view of what it considers deviant lifestyles.

But money is just the midwife in birthing Orange County’s right-wing causes.

Throughout much of the 20th century, Orange County attracted white middle-class and upper-middle-class residents who were either fleeing an increasingly diverse and liberal Los Angeles or were relocating from the Midwest and the South and bringing conservative regional values with them.

“When groups self-segregate, it leads to extremization,” said Peter Ditto, a UC Irvine social psychologist who studies political behavior. “People are more apt to go to that point of view when they are surrounded by like people. It kind of gives you license to become more extreme.”

Also helping focus the political energy was The Orange County Register’s ardent libertarian slant, according to Harvard historian Lisa McGirr’s “Suburban Warriors,” which examines the blossoming of conservative movements in Orange County.

Republicans’ share of county voter registration peaked in 1990, when they outpaced Democrats by 22 percentage points. The GOP’s edge is now 8 points and shrinking, and its share of registered county voters fell below 40 percent for the first time in December. Non-Latino whites are now a minority of the population.

But political experts said it’s hard to predict how such changes will affect the proliferation of right-wing causes.

“It would be less fertile ground, but you still have a big group of people,” Ditto said. “Being under attack, being a smaller piece of the pie breeds frustration, and they could feel even more strongly. As Republican registration chips away, it’s hard to say what will happen.”
I appreciate Deborah Pauly's comments (I know her from the tea party and anti-illegal immigration protests), but the rest of the piece is wildly overstated. North Orange County, from Santa Ana up into Fullerton and Anaheim, is extremely diverse and predominantly Democrat and leftist (the loony Loretta Sanchez leftism, for example). You need to go to South Orange County and the beach cities, especially Newport Beach, to find the remaining bastions of conservatism. Frankly, we're fighting a rearguard action around here, and I don't know how much longer the old-line conservative movement will remain.

In any case, continue reading.

Families Are Taken Into Custody as Push to Deport Immigrants Denied Refuge Begins

Postcards from Obama's America, at the Los Angeles Times.

Leftists are up in arms, comparing the U.S. to fascist regimes.

At the letters to the editor, "The Obama administration's inhumane, indefensible deportation of Central Americans":
To the editor: History will not remember kindly The Times' stance in support of deporting families back to extreme danger and death in Central America just because a judge ordered them out of the country. When we prioritize enforcing a broken bureaucracy over embracing the basic humanity of people who are suffering, we open the door to unspeakable tragedies. ("Why the Obama administration is right to deport migrants ordered to leave," editorial, Dec. 29)

Yet, despite acknowledging the injustices deeply embedded in the deportation system, the editorial board insists we must “follow through on legal processes that have been completed.”

No matter the great inadequacy of those processes? The Japanese internment was also found to be legal, after all.

No matter the human cost? We're talking about sending traumatized mothers and children back to countries that have the world's highest murder rates.

The Times seems to think its position is distinct from Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's drive for mass deportation, but it's really just paving the way.

Giant Container Ship Unloads at Port of Los Angeles (VIDEO)

An absolutely amazing vessel.

At WSJ:

The largest container ship ever to visit U.S. shores completed its first stop at the Port of Los Angeles ahead of schedule Tuesday night. Analysts, however, say U.S. ports aren’t prepared to regularly handle the peaks in container activity that such megaships present.

As global trade volumes swell and shippers seek to drive down costs, they are turning to larger, slower but more efficient vessels that strain the capacity of even the most efficient ports. Leading to the arrival of the 1,300-foot-long Benjamin Franklin, owned by French shipping line CMA CGM SA, officials at the Port of Los Angeles undertook an unprecedented level of preparation.

Trucking companies were notified of the glut of arriving containers, and railcars were positioned weeks in advance to ensure a speedy turnaround, according to a CMA CGM news release. The Benjamin Franklin, the largest container vessel ever to visit a U.S. port, carries a maximum of 18,000 20-foot equivalent units, a standard measure for container cargo.

Two weeks before the colossal ship arrived, the port received detailed information on container count and placement on the ship, as well as a breakdown of their destinations—to the Midwest via rail, for example, or to local retailers or inland warehouses to be unloaded. “Typically, we get that information 36 to 48 hours before the vessel arrives,” said Gene Seroka, executive director of the Port of Los Angeles.

Knowing it all farther ahead of time “gave us a great line of sight as to how we should plan railcar assets, truck power and longshore labor,” Mr. Seroka said, adding that it is a system the port wants to replicate as more large ships come to call...

Militia Takes Over Federal Building at Oregon's Malheur National Wildlife Refuge (VIDEO)

Now this is interesting, and it's just getting started, apparently.

At Instapundit, "OCCUPY OREGON: Three of Cliven Bundy’s sons, militia seize federal building in Oregon."

And at the Portland Oregonian, "Militia takes over Malheur National Wildlife Refuge headquarters":

Update at 9:15 p.m.: Statement from Harney County Sheriff Dave Ward: "After the peaceful rally was completed today, a group of outside militants drove to the Malheur Wildlife Refuge, where they seized and occupied the refuge headquarters. A collective effort from multiple agencies is currently working on a solution. For the time being please stay away from that area. More information will be provided as it becomes available. Please maintain a peaceful and united front and allow us to work through this situation."

The Bundy family of Nevada joined with hard-core militiamen Saturday to take over the headquarters of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, vowing to occupy the remote federal outpost 50 miles southeast of Burns for years.

The occupation came shortly after an estimated 300 marchers – militia and local citizens both – paraded through Burns to protest the prosecution of two Harney County ranchers, Dwight Hammond Jr. and Steven Hammond, who are to report to prison on Monday.

Among the occupiers is Ammon Bundy, son of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, and two of his brothers. Militia members at the refuge claimed they had as many as 150 supporters with them. The refuge, federal property managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, was closed and unoccupied for the holiday weekend...

The Reason I'm Anti-Anti-Trump

An interesting piece, from William Voegeli, at the Claremont Review of Books:
Demagoguery flourishes when democracy falters. A disreputable, irresponsible figure like Donald Trump gets a hearing when the reputable, responsible people in charge of things turn out to be self-satisfied and self-deluded. The best way to fortify Trump’s presidential campaign is to insist his followers’ grievances are simply illegitimate, bigoted, and ignorant. The best way to defeat it is to argue that their justified demands for competent, serious governance deserve a statesman, not a showman.

Stanford's Amazing Christian McCaffrey

From Bill Plaschke, at LAT, "Stanford's Christian McCaffrey shows the rest of the country what it missed":

You believe it now, America?

Do you finally believe this country's best college football player is the one who lost the Heisman Trophy?

Do you finally believe this country's most breathtaking college football player is the one with an ordinary build, from a brainy school, with a teenage slouch and a child-like smile?

While he was sprinting, you were sleeping. While he was making history in Palo Alto, you were paying attention to Tuscaloosa. While he was breaking records, you were buying into stereotypes.

But surely now you see, you must see, after 102-year-old Granddaddy jumped out of his chair Friday afternoon, threw open the doors to his sun-kissed Pasadena bungalow, and introduced him.

America, the Rose Bowl would like you to meet Christian McCaffrey.

Yeah, that was him, No. 5, green grass stains streaking down the side of his white uniform, black headband bunched on his brown hair, Rose Bowl history in his shoes.

Yep, that was the Stanford running back who juked and zagged and darted around television screens like a distressed bug in leading the Cardinal to a dominating 45-16 win over alleged Big Ten power Iowa in the Rose Bowl.

"Like somebody you create in a video game," Cardinal receiver Francis Owusu said...

Threat of Jihad Attacks Brings Highest Security in History of Rose Parade

Following-up from the other day, "Authorities Say Police Officers to Carry Bigger Guns at Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Festivities (VIDEO)."

At LAT, "San Bernardino attack casts shadow over Rose Parade; heavy security evident":
The Rose Parade got underway Friday amid tightened security and in the shadow of a terrorist attack less than a month ago that left 14 dead in San Bernardino.

Law enforcement officials increased security for this year's parade but stressed there was no specific threat against the event.

"We do have strong visible presence. There is plenty of security," said Pasadena Police Chief Phillip Sanchez on Friday morning. "We have state, federal and local officers all along the route. There are bomb-sniffing canines, rapid response teams and other less visible resources ready for anything."

Some parade-goers said the extra measures made a difference to them.

As Sanchez spoke a federal agent stood near a stand with a bomb-sniffing dog.

"It is nice to see the dogs," said Tom Kotter with his wife, Margie, from Cincinnati, who were attending their first parade. "It is reassuring. Obviously security is tight. How far is San Bernardino, like 50 miles?"

Elsewhere in Pasadena, people said the San Bernardino shootings were on their minds.

Angela Brown aimed to cash in on Rose Parade all-nighters with an eye-catching hand-painted wooden sign propped up in front of her home near the corner of East Colorado Boulevard and North Bonnie Avenue, an ideal spot to watch the floats drive past. Illuminated with a blinking light, the sign was hard to miss: "Parking $25. DUI $10,000."

But by 7:15 p.m. on Thursday, only one visitor had taken her up on the offer to park their car in Brown's front yard.

"A year ago, I was sold out by 1 p.m. with 10 cars in my yard," said Brown, 40, a veterinary technician. "This year, business is eerily dead, and I think I know why."

"People are afraid -- not of the cold or the traffic or of the trouble finding a place to park near the parade route," she said. "They are afraid of a cocktail of horrible stuff having to do with the terrorist attack in San Bernardino. People are wondering if it is safe or not to come to the Tournament of Roses this year. That's sad."

Gazing at the unusually light crowds on the sidewalk along Colorado Boulevard, she added, "This is most bizarre: there's almost nobody here."

A block away, Valerie Cheng, who has attended all but one Rose Parade over the last 30 years, leaned back in a folding chair and said, "Things are definitely different this year."

"There aren't as many people leaning on their car horns on Colorado Boulevard," she said. "And there aren't as many kids tossing marshmallows and tortillas filled with shaving cream at passing cars."

"It might be because of the terrorist attack," she said. "But, then again, it might be because there's no local team playing in the Rose Bowl this year."

Wrapped in blankets and wearing a heavy overcoat, nearby spectator Chuck Rasmussen, of La Jara, Colo., was more blunt.

"There are a third fewer people along this stretch of the parade than last year," said Rasmussen, a retired high school teacher, who traveled to Pasadena via Amtrak. "It's clearly because people are afraid of terrorism."

"While I was en route on the train, passing through San Bernardino, the terrorist attack did cross my mind," he said. "Gazing out the window, I thought, 'This is where it happened -- and it's not that far from Pasadena.'"

"But then I came to a decision: I'm not going to let it deter me," he said. "The Tournament of Roses is a great American institution."

No sooner had he arrived at the parade route than Rasmussen's wife called with pressing questions...

College Football National Playoffs Blowouts

The national title game's going to be an epic match up. Indeed, Clemson and Alabama may very well be the genuine top two teams in the country. But their playoff games certainly didn't force them to test their mettle. What a bunch of blowouts.

From Jon Solomon, at CBS Sports, "College football's New Year's Six bowls continue to disappoint":

For the second straight year, college football's New Year's Six bowl games were a total bore. This time, they were also a historic bore.

The six highest-profile bowls -- the Orange and Cotton for the national semifinals, and the Peach, Rose, Fiesta and Sugar -- were decided by an average margin of 24.2 points. That's the widest margin in one season for the biggest bowls during the College Football Playoff and BCS eras. Last year, the first New Year's Snooze -- er, New Year's Six -- games were decided by 18.2 points. That doesn't even count Ohio State's 22-point win over Oregon for the national championship.

Five of the nine most lopsided major bowl games since 2008 have occurred in the first two years of the New Year's Six: Ole Miss 48, Oklahoma State 20; Stanford 45, Iowa 16; Alabama 38, Michigan State 0; TCU 42, Ole Miss 3; Oregon 59, Florida State 20.

These are supposed to be the best bowl games?

ESPN's viewership naturally took a hit. TV ratings for the first New Year's Eve semifinals were a disaster with ratings of 9.9 and 9.7 compared to 15.5 and 15.3 last season on Jan. 1. The CFP was banking on overall higher New Year's Six numbers with the semifinals on New Year's Eve.

"Having the semifinals on New Year's Eve will be a real shot in the arm for those (TV) windows," CFP executive director Bill Hancock predicted last month. "The New Year's Day games are going to do great as always."

On Saturday, ESPN said the 7.1 overnight rating average for the New Year's Six was down 13 percent from last season's 8.2. The network said the four bowls not designated for a semifinal (Peach, Fiesta, Rose and Sugar) averaged a 5.8 overnight rating, up 26 percent from the four bowls that were not semifinals a year earlier.

The Rose Bowl's 7.9 overnight rating for the Stanford-Iowa blowout is the game's lowest on record dating to at least 1983, according to records kept by the Football Bowl Association. The previous low for the Rose was a 9.4 for a tight Stanford-Wisconsin game in 2013...
Bunch of ratings statistics, etc., and then:
Why is this happening? Frankly, a lot of it is cyclical (think of years when the Super Bowl has routs) and the random unpredictability of bowl games after a long layoff. You never know who's motivated, who's injured, who's tired, and who's looking ahead to the NFL. When the CFP Selection Committee revealed these matchups on Dec. 6, some of the New Year's Six games were regarded as fairly attractive pairings.

Keep in mind, some of these matchups are out of the committee's hands. The Sugar Bowl rout saw the SEC's No. 2 team (Ole Miss) beat essentially the Big 12's No. 4 team (Oklahoma State) due to Big 12 tiebreaker rules.

Another factor perhaps impacting the committee: Large conferences with unbalanced divisions and schedules. Look at the Rose Bowl. In hindsight, a Rose Bowl between Stanford and Ohio State could have been outstanding if the committee had ranked the Buckeyes ahead of Iowa.

The Hawkeyes played in the weaker Big Ten division without facing Ohio State, Michigan State and Michigan in the regular season. CFP committee chairman Jeff Long said Iowa finished ahead of Ohio State by proving more in a Big Ten Championship Game loss to Michigan State than the Hawkeyes had shown in their previous body of work up to that date.

The New Year's Six blowouts can also be explained by the thin margin between wins and losses we saw in this regular season...

Drug Prices Leave Even Insured, Affluent Struggling

I'm counting my blessings, I guess. So far most of my meds have been covered. And my family's too.

At WSJ, "Patients Struggle With High Drug Prices":
BELLEVILLE, Ill.— Jacqueline Racener ’s doctor prescribed a new leukemia drug for her last winter that promised to roll back the cancer in her blood with only moderate side effects.

Then she found out how much it would cost her: nearly $8,000 for a full year, even after Medicare picked up most of the tab.

“There’s no way I could do that,” Ms. Racener says. “It was just prohibitive.” Worried about depleting her limited savings, Ms. Racener, a 76-year-old legal secretary, decided to take the risk and not fill her prescription.

The pharmaceutical industry, after a long drought, has begun to produce more innovative treatments for serious diseases that can extend life and often have fewer side effects than older treatments. Last year, the Food and Drug Administration approved 41 new drugs, the most in nearly two decades.

The catch is their cost. Recent treatments for hepatitis C, cancer and multiple sclerosis that cost from $50,000 annually to well over $100,000 helped drive up total U.S. prescription-drug spending 12.2% in 2014, five times the prior year’s growth rate, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. High drug prices can translate to patient costs of thousands of dollars a year. Out-of-pocket prescription-drug costs rose 2.7% in 2014, according to CMS.

For many of the poorest Americans, medicines are covered by government programs or financial-assistance funds paid for by drug companies.

For those in the middle class, it is a different story. Though many patients can get their out-of-pocket costs paid by drug companies or drug-company-funded foundations, some patients make too much money to qualify for assistance. Others are unaware the programs exist. Medicare patients, who represent nearly a third of U.S. retail drug spending, can’t receive direct aid from drug companies.

The upshot is even patients with insurance and comfortable incomes are sometimes forced to make hard choices—tapping savings, taking on new debt or even forgoing treatment.

“Drugs are so expensive that once they flow through our ragtag insurance system, we have patients who can’t afford them, or they can barely afford them, so they’re not getting therapies,” said Peter Bach, a physician and health-policy researcher at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

A quarter of U.S. prescription-drug users said it was difficult to afford them, in an August survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation. In another survey, published in the journal Lancet Haematology in September, 10% of insured U.S. patients with the blood cancer multiple myeloma said they had stopped taking a cancer drug because of its cost.

A look at how patients are coping with the cost of the medicine prescribed for Ms. Racener, called Imbruvica, illustrates the issues...
Not sure how to solve this problem, but it's obviously lame that Medicare prohibits recipients from receiving prescription help from drug manufacturers. Seems like government always makes these problems worse.

Used Bookstores Making Comeback in the Age of Amazon

Well, I love used bookstores, obviously. Indeed, I had a nice shopping session over at the Bookman in Orange on New Year's Eve, heh.

At the Washington Post, "In the age of Amazon, used bookstores are making an unlikely comeback":
Early next month, Pablo Sierra is opening a used bookstore in Northwest Washington — an unlikely bet in the digital age made even more inconceivable, given that his only experience with books is reading them.

“I guess it is pretty crazy,” Sierra said, echoing an observation shared by some of his friends.

Or maybe not. Sierra, like other book lovers, has read articles about slowing e-book sales and watched as independent bookstores such as Politics and Prose thrive, catering to readers who value bookish places as cultural hubs and still think the best reading device is paper.

Used bookstores, with their quintessential quirkiness, eclectic inventory and cheap prices, find themselves in the catbird seat as the pendulum eases back toward print. In many cities, that’s a de facto position: They’re the only book outlets left.

While there are no industry statistics on used-book sales, many stores that survived the initial digital carnage say their sales are rising.

“It gets better and better every year,” said Susan Burwell, the co-owner of Reston’s Used Book Shop, the only used-bookstore left for an intellectually diverse Northern Virginia city of nearly 60,000 people.

Riverby Books D.C., a used-bookstore on Capitol Hill, closed last year after owner Steve Cymrot was hit by a truck and killed. His son Paul reopened the store in the fall — and didn’t hesitate. “The business side of it never gave us a moment’s pause,” he said. “We’ve never had better business.”

And it’s a business with good economics. Used bookstores can beat Amazon and other online booksellers on price, offering shoppers both a browsing experience and a money-saving one. Also, profit margins on used books are better than new ones — so good that many indies are adding used sections.

Sensing a good deal, entrepreneurs are jumping in...

Bob Eubanks and Stephanie Edwards

It was their last Rose Parade broadcast for KTLA, after so many years.

At the Los Angeles Times, "Review: Eubanks and Edwards, a Rose Parade tradition we hate to see go":
A half-hour into the 127th Rose Parade, KTLA co-host and New Year's Day icon Bob Eubanks was waxing rhapsodic about the American saddle horse.

Used to draw a Yellowstone tour bus that Scripps Miramar Ranch had sent to the parade to honor the first national park, these horses are, apparently, born with three gaits and taught two more, which Eubanks was just about to explain when longtime co-host Stephanie Edwards broke in.

“Are the three gaits anything like the three types of glue used to put petals on the floats?” she asked, inserting her own famously favorite bit of parade trivia into the commentary.

“OMG,” Eubanks sighed, with his equally signature disdain for the glue.

Edwards then went on to point out some of “our helpful Honda” friends in the crowd, causing Eubanks to gripe: “You interrupted me! I was talking about these horses, they were so beautiful.”

“I’m so sorry,” she said brightly, “you go right on.”

“Aw, they’re gone,” he sighed.

The exchange lasted just a few seconds and as the camera panned from the parade to the commentator’s booth, the two nudged each other and laughed.

“We’ve been fighting for years folks,” Eubanks said, “and it, well, it won’t stop.”

Except, alas, it will.

Jan. 1 marked the last Eubanks and Edwards Rose Parade. The two are retiring after more than 30 years of describing the magic of celery seeds and white coconut sparkles, of exclaiming over the glory of the floats and the hazards of the route, of identifying the various veterans, celebrities and notables waving to the crowds and explaining to national audiences the charms of “really neat” towns like Sierra Madre and Glendale.

We have a year to prepare ourselves, but it probably isn’t enough...
More.

And see, "Rose Parade hosts Bob Eubanks and Stephanie Edwards prepare to banter one last time."

They're both married, but their broadcast relationship is like a second marriage. I would always turn to Channel 5 KTLA to watch the parade, especially because they'd rebroadcast it all day long, and you wouldn't have to wake up at 8:00am to tune in, heh.

They're irreplaceable, but then, all things come to an end at some point, and change is good.

Investors Have Low Hopes for 2016

Well, that's not very encouraging.

At WSJ, "After a Tumultuous 2015, Investors Have Low Expectations for Markets":
After a year of disappointment in everything from U.S. stocks to emerging markets and junk bonds, investors are approaching 2016 with low expectations.

Some see the past year as a bad omen. Two major stock indexes posted their first annual decline since the financial crisis, while energy prices fell even further. Emerging markets and junk bonds also struggled.

Others view the pullback as a sensible breather for some markets after years of strong gains.

While large gains were common as markets recovered in the years after the 2008 financial crisis, many investors say such returns are growing harder to come by, and expect slim gains at best this year.

“You have to be very muted in your expectations,” said Margie Patel, senior portfolio manager at Wells Fargo Funds who said she expects mid-single percentage-point gains in major U.S. stock indexes this year.

“It’s pretty hard to point to a sector or an industry where you could say, well, that’s going to grow very, very rapidly,” she said, adding that there are “not a lot of things to get enthusiastic about, and a long list of things to be worried about.”

As the year neared an end, a fierce selloff hit junk bonds in December, while U.S. government bond yields rose only modestly despite the Federal Reserve’s decision to raise its benchmark interest rate in December, showing investors weren’t ready to retreat from relatively safe government bonds.

For the U.S., 2015’s rough results stood in contrast to three stellar years. After rising 46% from 2012 through 2014, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 2.2% last year. The S&P 500 fell 0.7%.

While most Wall Street equity strategists still expect gains for U.S. stocks this year, they also once again expect higher levels of volatility than in years past...

I guess even Apple lost market value in 2015, so it's down all around.

Rowland Heights Killings (VIDEO)

What's interesting is that the son was arrested after killing his father. Wasn't it self-defense? I mean, if he was right there, perhaps the father was about to kill him too.

In any case, at KTLA News 5 Los Angeles, via Memeorandum, "Son, 33, Fatally Shoots Father Who Killed 3 People in Rowland Heights: Sheriff's Department."

And at LAT, "Sheriff's officials: Four dead in Rowland Heights shooting, including gunman shot by son."

And watch, at CBS News 2 Los Angeles, "Man, 54, Shoots and Kills 3 People Inside His Home Before His Son Fatally Shoots Him."

This is a great Robert Stacy McCain post on Alabama's Crimson Tide, heh.

I think I learned more about Robert Stacy McCain from this post than I did by spending almost 36 hours with him back in 2010.

At the Other McCain, "Did I Forget to Mention #RollTide?"

Coney Island Polar Bear Club

Actually, in Southern California today, at least by Noontime, you could've have gone for a nice dip in the ocean no problem.

Maybe not in New York, though.

Watch, at CBS News 2 News York, "Polar Bears Take the Plunge."

And at the New York Times, "Despite a Warmer Winter, Annual Polar Bear Club Swim Still Chills."

Trump's Not 'Disgusting' — What's Disgusting is for Leftists to Exploit New Year's to Smear GOP Frontrunner (VIDEO)

I was at the Rose Parade this morning.

It's the first time I've ever attended (after all these years, seriously), and I guarantee you the last thing I would've imagined is that I'd be writing this post after a long day of New Year's celebrations. Seems to me the Rose Parade should be relatively politics-free. Sure, it's an old-fashioned cowboy-themed marching-band shindig, but jeez, you think leftists might eschew freakin' skywriting aircraft to smear Donald Trump?

We'd been there for, I guess, about an hour, and all of a sudden all the folks next to me start "oohing" and "awing" while turning around, looking up at the sky. The sun was to our backs so I was basically blinded, but I see the planes skywriting "America is Great." My first thought, since the sun was lined up exactly behind the skywriting, was that the message read "Make America Great Again." But as I looked more closely, I see the planes continue skywriting, streaking the message "Trump is Disgusting" right after "America is Great." So, obviously, some idiot leftists thought they'd be cute and use the New Year's Day setting to score political points, attacking Donald Trump as a "fascist" and a "dictator." I kid you not.

Frankly, I was disgusted.

And I'll tell you, there were a lot of Latinos on the street, and it seemed to me the reception was mixed. Sure, a few people guffawed and hurrahed at the message, but for the most part folks turned back around toward Colorado Boulevard and tried to enjoy their family time amid the festivities. Really, isn't that what it's all about? For us all to be Americans together, for at least one non-partisan day out of the year?

I guess not. Because as soon as we got back to my buddy's house after Pasadena, and we put on KTLA 5 to watch the reruns of the parade, I checked Twitter and Tabitha Bliss was tweeting the big political story of the day, "Skywriters have message for Trump at Rose Parade."

I don't know who paid for the skywriters, but when I find out they're going to be hating life for the rest of this year, because I'm going to make it my business to delegitimize these losers if it's the last thing I do. (ADDED: If it turns out to be Marco Rubio backers, then well, I've really lost my appetite for the Cuban GOP senator from Florida. Talk about blowback.)

In any case, the Hill has the story, via Memeorandum, "Skywriting above Rose Parade: ‘Trump is disgusting’."

Again, I'm really disgusted at this. Bad timing. Bad politics. Bad blood.

Heading Out to the Rose Parade

My young son and I are heading out to Pasadena. One of my old grad school buddies has a parking spot along the parade route, or so I'm told, heh.

Check my Twitter feed for live updates in a couple of hours or so.

And then more blogging later tonight!
